Play and recreation
After all this work our children still have time to play. Football and volley ball are very popular with boys and girls. The girls also enjoy netball. We now have two football pitches, together with a volley ball and netball pitch on a large area adjacent to our main site.
Our children are ingenious at designing games with very limited materials. Draughts is a popular game played with bottle tops. Stones, twigs and berries are also used for other games.
A popular and creative hobby of the boys is to make cars out of wire, with round plastic discs for wheels. The cars have a long cane steering column which enables them to be pushed along and steered. All boys love playing marbles, which can be bought in Kisumu and are a popular gift. The young girls enjoy a game of hop, skip and jump, or simple games with a tennis ball.
Our children love singing, dancing and drumming and know many traditional songs and dances. Singing, dancing and drumming are a important part of their Luo culture. Singing is also a popular form of worship in the churches. Our children enjoy practising their singing and dancing to perform at festivals, celebrations and to welcome visitors.
