Food and meal times

Photo of girls at Double Joy with plates of maize and beans for lunchThe children rise with the sun at 6 am and have breakfast of maize porridge which is cooked by the older girls.

At 12 midday they have lunch prepared by our cook. This is usually maize and beans, but more recently they have started having meat or eggs every Thursday.

The evening meal is taken between 5 and 6 and is cooked by the older girls. This is maize cake and green vegetables (like kale). The children eat all meals in their houses.

It is normal for a Kenyan family to eat similar food every day. Poorer families may skip food for a couple of days if they have no money and their crops are not ready or are finished.

One of the things the children love about Double Joy is knowing they will get regular meals every day.
