What I do at Double Joy from when I wake up in the morning to when I go to sleep

These descriptions of the daily routines were written by some of the children at Double Joy.

Doreen Akoth

When I wake up in the morning I brush my teeth, after this we move some blankets. Some others make breakfast while we mop our houses, after mopping we wash ourselves and then we drink our breakfast. Then we wash our cups (we have liquid porridge). Then the boys are playing, only the girls wash cups.

Then some people go to the clinic then we go to assembly, and starting from class four they pray on different days. Teachers are talking and after talking they say, ‘disperse’ and we disperse to our classes for our lessons. After that we go for our lunch.

Our lunch is maize mixed with beans and then some tea.

After lunch some people go to craft, tailoring, carpentry and bicycle repair lessons. Girls only are going to tailoring lessons. After that we go to play games, then we go to cook our supper. After supper we go to pray then we do our preps. (Homework). Then after preps. we go to sleep at 9 p.m.

In Double Joy we wake up at 6 a.m., we remove our mats and blankets and then we brush our teeth and boys go to prepare breakfast and the remaining children sweep the houses and the compound. After doing this work we wash our legs and faces and then we take our breakfast. Then Nurse rings the bell for those who are sick to take their medicine and we wash the utensils and go to assembly. At 8 am we start our lessons up to 10.30 and we read up to 1235, then we take our lunch of maize and beans called sokotas ( red kidney beans) and drink tea. Then we wash our plates and cups and some people go for bathing while we take in the mats and go for assembly before afternoon classes. Girls of our class do tailoring and boys go to the bicycle repair workshop or carpentry workshop. We learn up to 3.45 pm then we go to the games field and play up to 5 pm. After that we go to assembly and teachers count us. Then we prepare supper and eat it then we wash the utensils and some people go to the clinic for treatment and the bell ringer rings the bell and we go for assembly. We pray again and afterwards we go to Masterman Hall and do our preps. up to 9pm when the house parents escort us to our houses where we finally go to sleep.
